Course Descriptions
Are You Struggling to Select an Elective?
Below is a brief description of some of the electives offered at QE. Please contact your homeroom teacher if you have any further questions.
Fine Arts
Experiencing Music 2200
A great course for anyone who wants to learn about music and get FINE ARTS credit - no musical experience necessary. A great overview of music and the different genres.
Applied Music 2206/3206
This course is for students who want to play an instrument on a regular basis. Students usually have experience with their instrument, but beginners who are keenly interested in learning an instrument are welcomed. Students should take Applied Music 2206 before 3206 as the outcomes build on each other.
Ensemble Performance 1105/2105/3105
This is an extra credit FINE ARTS course for those who join the band or choir. The rehearsal schedule is dependent on the group. Students register for the course consistent with their grade level. Students who join these ensembles can get 1 extra credit per year. Some students (especially those in FI or who are taking extra sciences) use ensemble to satisfy their FINE ARTS credit. Students who take ensemble will have 1 extra credit on their graduation plans (per year).
Drama 2206
A two-credit course that satisfies the Fine Arts credits or Optional Language credits. This course aims to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to effectively express their thoughts, ideas and feelings in the area of dramatic arts. A central purpose of Drama 2206 is to reflect upon the process of dramatic learning which includes a large focus on writing, and participation and performance are also key to success in this course.
Theatre Arts 3220
It is recommended that you do Drama 2206 before this course but it's not necessarily a requirement. Theatre Arts 3220 is a performance-based course where students learn about all aspects of theatre. If you really like design, sound mixing or the technical side of things, this is a course for you. It explores sound and lighting design, directing, wardrobe, props and set (and a bit of acting too). I wanted to promote it because it is a course that very few schools offer, and it is something special we have here.
Clothing 1101 & Textiles 3101
This two course offering satisfies both a Fine Arts or Family Studies credit. This is a very hands on course where students learn different methods of making textile products, how to use tools for sewing and the textile arts.

Residential Construction 2201

Optional Language
Writing 2203
An optional language course designed to accommodate a wide range of students’ interests and abilities. It offers students the opportunities to explore writing as both a means of personal expression and as a method of communication. The course is chiefly assessed through the compilation of an individual writing portfolio, which includes short prose, poetry, dramatic scripts, and transactional writing. Two credits in English are awarded upon successful completion of Writing 2203.
Novel Cinema 3221
An optional course in English that examines film and literature studies, specifically in how they join and part company as genre. Novel Cinema takes film study as a focus by critically examining short stories, novels and plays and their cinematic equivalents. The film adaptation is explored in depth once the original source has been discussed as a literary text in class. The film and literature components of the course are weighted equally. Two credits in English are awarded upon successful completion of Novel Cinema 3221.
